Since Alzhemed's failure to meet the significance expected in its trials, the followup data analyses have not indicated the Alzhemed works.

The Neurochem Company reports the following concerning it's new Alzheimer's Disease drug called Alzhemed™ now in clinicl trials :

Alzhemed™ has completed a Phase II clinical trial. A phase 3 trial is under way (it might even be available to mild AD patients now - 1/05)

Neurochem had previously investigated the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profiles of Alzhemed™ in healthy volunteers in the four Phase I clinical trials. In in vivo studies, its anti-amyloid effectiveness has also been evaluated in a transgenic mouse model of brain amyloid and demonstrated that Neurochem's compound had a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on both the development of cerebro-vascular amyloid ß (Aß) deposition and on Aß plasma concentration.

Results of the phase I clinical studies, presented at the 7th International Geneva/Springfield Symposium on Advances in Alzheimer's Therapy in 2002, and other interesting information is available upon request from the company.

As part of a unique "disease modifying" class of drug candidates developed by Neurochem, Alzhemed™ is believed to act at three levels:

To prevent and stop the formation and deposition of amyloid fibrils in the brain and in binding to soluble Aß - prior to fibril formation;

To favor the clearance of soluble Aß from the brain, lowering the risk of fibril formation; and

To inhibit the inflammatory response associated with amyloid build-up in Alzheimer's Disease.

AlzheimersScreen.com comment: You might want to investigate the status of other "amyloid aggregation-inhibitors" e.g. Praecis and Serono companies.
